If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s possible you’ve been infected with adware or other malware:

  • The same ad on every site you visit

  • Explicit or inappropriate ads on multiple websites

  • Multiple pop-ups and ads on multiple sites, even with an ad blocker enabled

  • Your browser’s homepage changing without your consent

  • For Safari: Unlike in other browsers, it’s not possible to tell if AdBlock is paused by looking at the AdBlock icon in the menu, since it never changes color in Safari. To pause or unpause Adblock for Safari, see these instructions for disabling and reenabling AdBlock in Safari.

  • For all other browsers: In order to check if AdBlock is paused, look at the AdBlock icon in your browser toolbar. If the stop sign is green (in Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge) and the hand has changed to a thumbs-up, it means AdBlock is paused or you have allowed ads on the page or site.

Unpausing AdBlock is as simple as opening the AdBlock menu (by clicking on the AdBlock icon in your browser toolbar) and selecting “Resume blocking ads.”

Adblock

Mobile:

AdBlock on iPhone, iPad and Samsung Internet don't have a pause feature. The only way to disable AdBlock on these devices is to temporarily disable content blocking. Here’s how to check whether content blocking is enabled or AdBlock is paused on mobile:

  • In iOS, open Settings > Safari > Content Blockers to confirm your content blocking settings. If you don’t see a Content Blockers option in your Safari settings menu, it means you most likely don’t have AdBlock installed. If AdBlock isn't installed, here's how to install and enable it.

  • In Samsung Internet Browser, Tap the browser menu (the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner). You should see an option for View without content blocker. If you don't see the option View without content blocker, it means you most likely don't have AdBlock installed. If AdBlock isn't installed, here's how to install and enable it.

  • Firefox allows you to pause and unpause AdBlock from the browser. Tap the browser menu (the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner). And tap AdBlock. You should see Pause AdBlock if AdBlock is enabled. If AdBlock is disabled, you’ll see Unpause AdBlock. Tap Unpause AdBlock to re-enable AdBlock. If you don't see the AdBlock menu option, it means you most likely don't have AdBlock installed. If AdBlock isn't installed, here's how to install and enable it.

  • In Safari and Firefox, private mode doesn't disable extensions, so there's nothing special you need to do to use AdBlock in private mode.

  • In Chrome and Microsoft Edge, extensions don't run in private or incognito mode by default. You need to enable them. Here’s how:

Chrome:

  1. Type chrome://extensions in the address bar.

  2. Under AdBlock in the extensions list, click Details.

  1. Scroll down and click the toggle switch next to Allow in incognito to on.

  2. Point to the AdBlock button and select Settings (the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner)

  1. Scroll down and check Allow for InPrivate Browsing (if it’s already checked, that means it’s enabled. You’re all set!)

If you’re only seeing ads occasionally, and they’re not annoying or intrusive, you may be seeing Acceptable Ads. AdBlock doesn’t block these ads by default (here’s why we choose not to block non-intrusive ads).

In order to see your Acceptable Ads settings, open the AdBlock menu (by clicking the AdBlock icon in your upper right-hand corner of your browser) and select the gear icon to open the General Options page.

If you’re seeing ads on websites that previously didn’t have ads, there may be an issue with your filter lists. A good first step in troubleshooting filter list issues is to perform a manual update. For guidance on updating your filter lists, please see our knowledge base article: How do I manually update my filter lists?

If you have more than one ad blocker enabled, disable all but one of them. You might think more ad blockers = more blocked ads, but many ad blockers can interfere with each other’s functionality, making it more difficult to block ads. If you’re not sure whether you have more than one ad blocker installed, follow our instructions for checking to see if AdBlock is installed.
